This happens when you are using a (very) low screen res (like 800x600) because that is the first thing Messenger cuts out/hides (you can see the sequence of that if you make the window smaller, just grab the bottom border with left mouse button and move it upwards). All other windows will look as in the screenshot, on low screenres. too.
