PS: In a more practical sense, aligning the interests of the company with the interests of the gamer by relating their profit to their clientelle ensures ongoing maintenance and high standards of the service and is hence beneficial to both the user and the company.
The only reason Sony is choosing to lose money on the PSN is because they're fighting a battle which they can't afford to lose, just don't expect your current standards to last.
