RE: Sign in when connect to network (automatically)
Messenger already lets you sign in when a connection is established:
Options -> Sign In -> Check "Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet"
As for your question about the WLM icon, unfortunately it cannot be completely removed easily. The easiest way is to allow Windows to hide certain icons (you may need to set it to always hide WLM).
Also, Messenger Plus! Live's Messenger Lock feature changes the tray icon to whatever you want, if that's what you're looking for.
