hey if you're one of those ppl who tried all possible ways and still couldn't get it to work, try this:
(i was one of those people lol)

1. Go to My Computer, Local Disk, Program Files
2. Go to the Windows Live Folder
3. Click the Contacts folder
4. In it, you will see a file called wldlog.dll
5. Rename it to wldlog.dllX

i really hope this helps (:
i had a lot of problems after updating messenger.
i got fed up with them, then downloaded the old one.
just last week, they said i wouldn't be able to use messenger until i updated to the new version, and here i am again, stuck with the same problems of:
- freezing conversations
- half my contact list missing
- can't add new contacts
- can't see anyone's personal message
- the Windows Live Communications Platform error keeps popping up

sigh microsoft should work on this
