I'm developing a script which places WLM back to the system tray on Windows 7 as it used to be.

Properties of msnmsgr.exe -> Compatibility -> Windows Vista

Which introduces other issues, also Plus! reverts that setting every time you install a new version. Although I wonder if a script would be able to do it in a better way.

So why not make it that it wouldn't be slow? what is a big difference when in compatibility to vista sp2?
Is it also slow on vista then?

P.S. as you may guessed I have no idea what compatibility feature does on programming level...

There is just no need to run Messenger in any compatibility mode. Especially now the MessengerToTray script is out.

The thing with compatibility mode is you are tricking aplications into thinking they are on another OS. Which might cause it to do some Vista-specific instructions while it is actually on Win7... it can have unpredictable results in any applications and you can't expect developers to be testing for it. It's a use at your own risk kind of thing.

AFAIK the Plus! issues on compatibility-mode Vista don't happen in native Vista.

Personally I run Windows Live Messenger 2011 in combination Messenger Plus! v5 under "Vista SP2" Compatibility Mode and so far have not experienced any problems.

Goes without saying that this could always cause problems either way, if not at least with a varying use of scripts. If problems occur you should always make sure that Compatibility Mode or the "MessengerToTray" script aren't the cause.

Thank you for mention this! I didn't know about that script (especially that it's not listed in scripts database)
For anyone's convenience the script is located in this topic:

Works great on my computers (it even shows preview in taskbar, which wasn't available in compatibility mode)

Not that it's very important, but I'm curious, what shows preview in taskbar? My Contact List and Conversation windows do show previews in Taskbar in Compatibility mode Vista SP2.

Either way, the script is more than likely a better solution than using Compatibility mode, as it may cause unforeseen bugs.

If you're using Windows 7, WLM2009 and MP!L 4.82+ (with tabbed chats enabled), you get this:

It was a nice feature. I kinda miss it on WLM2011 (considering the buggy taskbar icon flashing/overlay)...
