Don't you have to use an external app to check hotmail in Outlook though?

No, it'sintegtated in Outlook Express since IE5.5 and in Outlook since Office XP as a special account option:

mail.hotmail.com aint it, port 110
then smtp.hotmail.com port 25

I just went through the stuff on outlook express, set it up, then went to check my emails and it said the service is unavailable. it works fine on my ntl account.

Gmail might violate privacy according to privacy watchers. Google's cookie already keeps track of every search you ever conduct and an Orkut-cookie stores who you are. Gmail will be free but the e-mails that you'll send will contain adds that are similar to what you search most. If you delete an e-mail or terminate your account, Google might have a copie of your e-mails on their servers saved.
