I really liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy but I also really liked the Matrix trilogy. Both have excellent plots, great actors and fantastic special effects. I find it hard to say which I like better.
I just read this thread, and omg, you're all cinematically incompetent.
Out of the Matrix Trilogy, only the first one was good, the other two were total crap. LOTR, whilst nice to see a cinematic adaption of the classic books was just not all that truthful to the novels.
Whomever mentioned Blow seemed to be the only one with a streak of uniqueness in him.
You're all way too much into Hollywood crap. Minority Report is about the most philosophical and deep that Hollywood gets with films. Actually, Requiem for a Dream is pretty meaningful in terms of Hollywood films, even though the Kronos Quartet killed that requiem for me.
The best director ever? Luc Besson. Watch Le Grande Bleu and you'll understand.
The best film ever though? Filantropica. Watch it.

even if i tried to categorize them into different genres it would be impossible. One move i will never forget though would be.. City of Angels
others i like were 'Hackers' 'Serendipity' 'Dogma' 'Kiss of the Dragon' 'Short Circit 1&2' .... and..

The History of the World - Part One. It's an older movie, but still funny as hell.
Matrix would also get a vote from me, I personally liked the first the best. At that point, we didn't know the whole story, and had to guess a lot of it, which made it more fun for me.
