I dunno if it's possilble or not but I do not rlly agree.. i  think there is a certain privacy ppl deserve to keep.. if they want to block you, or to appear offline,  I belive it's their choice..

I dont think its possible. I remember once that you could know if your contact was away or idle, changing a setting with a resource editor. And that was because there were two same-names objects called Away. One was for away status and other was for Idle

That way, you could know if the contact was really away for status or Idle.
It could there be a way to change the offline status to Appear offline. That way it would show "Appearing offline" instead of "offline"

Messenger Discovery has this feature. But it is a little buggy I think. Or not? It works for me.

It's not always 100% right, look at (CyBeRDuDe)'s post above...

The only way to partly know this... Is that MD is able to detect when people goes offline, meaning both offline, appearing offline or have blocked you.. you will get the same message and ther eis NO way to distingues one form another... what MD then does is that it just waits to check and hopefully one the contact that "went offline" will open a conversation window with you, if they do MD knows about this and is then able to tell you that the person is still online, but i appearing offline OR blocked you, since it still cannot know the difference between those 2 either...
So this is not a very reliable way to do.. BUT AFAIK it is the ONLY way... so... your choice to think "it's possible" or "it's NOT possible", beacuse to some extent it is possible, but with many things like OpenConvo this is simply just not reliable eough as to what we would call possible...

isn't the point of blocking people so they don't know you're blocking them, and the same for appearing offline, sure it would be nice but if you blocked someone/appeared offline to them and they could tell you were appearing offline, wouldn't that p**s you off lol?
sure it's a good idea, but if everyone had it there'd be no use in appearing offline/blocking
