Yeah.. the new GUI is unbelievable ugly. Oh well.

I quite like it... although the top part of the contact list looks like it's just been stuck on top of the old version rather sloppily.

Thats what i thought at first too guys. But then i saw that the MessengerAdictos.com branded "installer" just copies the WLM 8.5 into a special Messenger Adictos folder in %programfiles%

What makes me suspicious is that at the end of WLM 8.1 Beta it was confirmed to me by someone "on the inside" that there would not be another 8.x updates, but that it'd be 9.0. But yet the installer appears to be genuinly signed by MS.

And yes, as Chrono said, the same thing happened when screenshots of "Messenger 8" appeared (remember the "orange" GUI?), before it was officially renamed to Windows Live Messenger. Many people (myself included) put it down as being fake due to the orange GUI, and also the lack of "MSN" being in the applications name. And look what happened, that turned out to be genuine.

Could this indeed be a legit version and that MS have decided the next update will be a 8.5, or is it just known as 8.5 now, and will be renamed/renumbered to 9.0 later?

What interests me is how the build number (8.5.1235) seems to be very high for this early(?) stage of the beta. Not really sure what to make of that.

I'm not fully sure if Microsoft restarts the build number for minor releases (ie 8.0 -> 8.1 - 8.2 etc.) or just for major ones (7 -> 8 -> 9). I cant remember, but that could be one reason

Apparently you can tweak this build into English by doing the following (from mess.be):

"copy the old language file ("msglang.dll") of Windows Live Messenger 8.1.0178 over the new one ("msglang.8.5.1235.0517.dll")"

I don't have the old language file any more though... anyone?

http://random.menthix.net/msgslang.8.5.1235.0517.dll (already renamed), place it in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger. Or you could just install the last public version and get it from there.
