OK because it still does happen without messenger plus! installed, then I would try this. This will tell you how to do a clean install of Windows Live Messenger.

Looking at your screenshot I see that you started a chat with a "Mobile Device" (look at the window icon).

This is not a conversation window.

As for the white information bar, that wouldn't nessecairly have showed your status or your contact's status, it could have been other things too.

So, the reason why it is white can be that there is some other info showing there (eg: other than a "your status is x") but that there isn't a resource for it. And that can be explained by a locked resource file when you installed the new version (and thus it couldn't be updated with the possible new resources) or if your Messenger resources are messed up in general.

To pinpoint the cause more and to try and figure out what the message would have been, can you answer all these questions:

1) What was your status at that moment?
2) What was your contact's status at that moment?
2) Did you bought credits to send mobile phone messages?

clean install did not work. it was just a sample conversation window. this white bar remains with every contact including myself.

I've had this happen to me before, see here.
But, no one was able to help, and for me, it will work most of the time, however there will be times when it will just be a white or grey bar (like your white bar)
Have you experienced like on my picture a contact's display picture coming out as a white box aswell?

no. display pictures are okay all the time. just this white status bar
