If I understand correctly, he wishes to share the wireless connection on his laptop with his PS2. This is how I have my XBox 360 set up so I assume as it should be possible on the PS2 using it's Ethernet port.
Ansette, have you tried using another cable? Perhaps (although unlikely) you may need a standard straight-through Ethernet cable rather than a crossover? Or, as xen0h said you may have a bad cable. If you can, try with another and see if the problem still occurs.
