Yes and no. The old 8800GTS [the 384/768mb models] are based on the old G8x cores and are indeed no good, but the new ones [512mb/1gb ram] are based on the G92 core [same core as the 8800GT] but the memory and GPU cores are clocked at a higher rate, hence it's faster [edit: than the GT].
Also, the GT has 112 stream processors whereas the GTS has all 128 unlocked.
The 9600GT only has half this - 64 stream processors, but it's based on the newer G94 core.
If you have the cash, I'd get a 9800GTX. But you should realise the jump from 8xxx to 9xxx is much smaller than that from 7x. to 8x. [at least for equivalent models]. Also, I'm yet to see a 1GB 9800GTX.. but there are definitely 1GB 9600GTs.
