Hey,

I'm buying a new laptop in a few days. And I have a few choices (alienware ftw ). Basically I am wondering whether to get one of the following:

320GB 7200rpm With free fall protection
OR
400GB 5400rmp without free fall.

Im almost certain about the 320 one having a better "specs/space ratio".

So, the 320 or 400?

320GB one....5400rpm is scrotum bad

And plus it ahs FreeFall protection, whatever that is.

But if you're posting this just for no reason knowing well that you'll need 400GB because it's more space, dunno

Can't you tell us the rest of the laptop's specs and prices?

I must say that after being a computer tech for the past 3 years and dealing with customers' broken laptops, I would definitely go for the free fall protection. You'd be surprised how easy laptop HDDs crap out.

Yeah, go for the 7200RPM one.

If the shock-resistance actually works, it won't make a blind bit of difference if you actually drop the damned thing: The screen will crack, and they are £100-£200 to replace, depending on size.

Alienware m15x (I cba to type out the whole spec) but its 2k

And yeah it has "g-sensors" which lock the needle agaisnt the platter to stop it scratching or something

It's a case where you need to decide what your priorities are.

The 5400rpm drive should give you 25% more space, better battery life and lower noise (including fan noise).

The 7200rpm drive should be expected to give better performance, although it would be easier to comment on that if we knew exactly what drives we are talking about (some higher aerial density 5400rpm drives easily tie 7200rpm models).

Yeah there is 5400 hybrid which is very similiar to 7200rpm. But yeah how much battery life do I save with 5400?

It's a samsung I think, all it says on the site is:
320GB 7200 RPM SATA with Free Fall Protection [+£201]
400GB 5400 RPM SATA [+£176] 

Yeah as you can see, the 320 is slightly more expensive.

Alienware sucks.. and why do they think its ok to charge £200 for a 320GB HDD?

Why not get a thinkpad for half the price?

Thinkpads are horrible :/ I really don't like them. (that's just my opinion)

Anyway new question, which one (considering its only .1ghz different and 3mb cache - is that alot more)

EDIT, oh and dazzy they charge less for more storage:

So actually for £200 I can get 400GB but its only 5400RPM
