O.P. Unable to sign in - Windows Live Messenger 2009
Hi All,

I have been through all the steps suggested here to resolve my sign-in problem.
I even have a fresh install of XP SP3 installed now and still I can't use Windows Live Messenger 9x, even after upgrading from version 8 or a fresh 9 install. I have unfortunatly had to re-install version 8 to use MSN Messenger to even communicate with friends now. I also have Skype and that logs in no problems and does video\audio\phone without a hitch.

What happens is I click on sign in and the little men spin around for 30 seconds, then it takes me back to the sign in button again.
If I am logged on at another PC, it logs me out, so it must connect  for a second and kick me off. I have cheked all settings and tried suggestions from sticky threads in this forum. The Connection Troubleshooter says everything is fine.

I can use the web version, I can sign in to my Live account via Explorer.
When I check connections in Windows Live Messenger, it says everything is ok and I can connect and there is nothing wrong with the server, however, I am not able to stay signed in, it just flashes back to the sign in button.

I upgraded to the new version for the sharing folders and I have had to since remove it with Messenger removal tools i found here and go back to version 8 which, just for argument sake,  logs in just fine.

I have all the windows updates and I am a genuine XP user. I also have .NET 3.5 sp1 installed and working.

I am not sure what else to do and my friends are all on version 9 now and want to do folder sharing etc. Would it have anything to do with my Quad Core AMD CPU? is it compiled for dual or single only perhaps?
Is there and fix for this? are the developers aware of any issues?

Use ZapMessenger, delete the whole Windows Live folder from C:\Program Files and then install Windows Live Messenger from here. Also, Sharing folders has been disabled in the final version of Windows Live Messenger "2009".

Well I tried as you suggested above, re-booted and now I get a box popping up saying
"Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailble. Please try again later
Error code:8007007e"

I ran the Tools / Options / Connection Trouble shooter and it says everything is fine and it can connect. The online Server site also says the service is up and running properly.
Why was sharing folders removed? that's so bad. My friends used it for pictures etc.

Google that error, I'm sure you will find a solution to it there or so. Also, have a look here. As for the sharing folders, it was replaced with Windows Live SkyDrive.

Try

1. Run "sfc /scannow" and restart the computer;
2. Uninstall WLM9 with ZapMessenger;

Well now i am back to square 1 where the men spin around for a bit, then take me back to the sign in button.
I am also now minus the ATI drivers and TV card drivers, so I guess I'll re-install those but still no luck!
Talk about frustrating.

I also get a window with Microsoft Error Reprting popping up asking me to send the report or not to send. There is no error code however.

Some details I could copy are :

Error signature
AppName: wlcomm.exe     AppVer: 14.0.8064.206     ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512     Offset: 00036eca

There's a lot more than that in the error report but I can't copy and paste.

It still knocks me back to the sign in button.
The funny thing is, If I deliberatly give an incorrect password, it tells me I have the wrong password or email address, so it must be connecting with the server for a second or so to be able to tell me that.
When I use the correct password, it just bumps me out to the sign in again. I don't always get the error report. I tried making another account on the computer and logged in to that only to get the same issue.
