You need to enable it first by going to your profile page, clicking edit underneath Facebook and then tick "Chat to your Facebook friends" or whatever the option is called. I don't either but both of my friends I'm talking to now have no online contacts, and my Windows Live Messenger app on my Facebook profile sees me as being offline.
