By the look of your add/remove programs list, you have an HP computer. I have an HP laptop and I'm having the same problem so maybe it's HP related? Could it be the bundled software? (!VER) isn't understood, nicknames appear as formatting codes?
Windows Live Messenger 14.0.8050.1202 Messenger Plus! Live 4.80.0.356 When I type (!VER) and send it, it just comes up in the conversation as (!VER).
