Ok, I can officially say this problem has been solved. The Windows Installer Clean Up Tool did the trick, it was as I suspected, the stupid Photo Gallery thing needed to be removed from Add/Remove Programs. No dice. I reset all themes to default, and reinstalled Messenger 8.1 and Plus! Live 4.81. Then let Messenger run the Essentials update.
