RE: Checking MSN Messenger's version number
I wonder why they do that. Not only they don't show the versionnumber, they never announce a new version either. So inconvenient por upgraders...weird

RE: Checking MSN Messenger's version number
Yes, I know that. What I meant is that at the official MSN Microsoft website they don't provide any information on the version/build number of the client they offer for download so I was wondering if I was missing something from the site.

RE: "Idle" and "Away"
Ok, yes . I've read some of those threads and I see that it's not a 100% certainty. Thanks for the info.

RE: "Idle" and "Away"
Ok, so when a contact shows as "Away" it might mean he's still there but intentionally set the status as "Away", whereas if it shows "Idle" it means 100% that he's not using the PC, right? When patching with A-Patch I enabled the option to di...

Checking MSN Messenger's version number
I always wondered, when I go to Microsoft's official MSN download website, http://messenger.msn.com/ , nowhere in that page does it show the version and build number of the client being downloaded, am I missing something?

RE: MSN Messenger huge resource hog
Cookie, when I open the Windows task Manager and click on the "Processes" tab you have a list of the running processes and below, at the bottom of the window there's a "Commit Charge" reading. When I reboot WinXP that reading is usually about 26...

RE: MSN Messenger huge resource hog
Thanks Sypher. I already uninstalled/reinstalled MSN 7.0.777, applied the 813 QFE patch and then applied latest A-Patch. Everything working fine and stable, but the usage count as shown in Task Manager is still the same, about 855MB for 3 MSN clients...

RE: MSN Messenger huge resource hog
In my case each msnmsgr.exe is using approx.9MB, but for some reason it is making the system load up to 800MB and going up with time. The only patch I have is Plus! (using ~2.5MB) and A-Patch (which I guess is not running). By the way where can I get...

MSN Messenger huge resource hog
Without MSN Messenger clients open I have a commit charge of 268MB used (task manager read). When I open 3 MSN clients (latest 7.0777 version) my usage goes up to 756MB!. So the 3 MSN clients are using approx.500MB of precious resources...why? Is thi...

RE: Wikipedia.org vs Encarta&Britannica
Well, I bet that neither Enc nor Brit will be able to provide you an answer 100% of all times, whereas the net will as its content is not limited. The power of wikipedia is that millions of net users around the world like you and me are constantly e...

RE: Backing up winks, moods and emoticons
My only concern in asking this is that they might have some sort of activation that makes them specific to the machine were they're installed...but if you know for sure other people did it then I guess it can be done.

Thanks everyone for their feedback on this subject. I do agree with the view about being more safe for kids or being useful for people not having internet access or not competent at searching the net. My question is: say you have broadband access and...

RE: Wikipedia.org vs Encarta&Britannica
What I meant is that almost any sort of information on any subject can be found in the Internet, name it wikipedia or elsewhere. So I guess if one knows basic searching there's no need for installing these programs.

Wikipedia.org vs Encarta&Britannica
Why would anyone want to waste over 4Gb of hard drive space installing Encarta or britannica if any info can be found online like wikipedia.org?

RE: [updated 1/2/06] A-Patch v1.3.0 RC2 - 1 Million Downloads!
I'm not bashing you either, I really think it would be convenient. Many times you just want to check if a contact is online and the popup would serve that purpose. Then if you want to send him a message you could open the MSN as usual, but the "che...

RE: [updated 1/2/06] A-Patch v1.3.0 RC2 - 1 Million Downloads!
1) I think this feature would be extremely useful, it would save all mouse clicks and a lot of time, and hence very convenient. 2) The convenience of this feature would be for ALL of us users of MSN, not JUST for me. 3) Conclusion: I posted this sugg...
