RE: CSS Did you look on the link i gave, view the css and change widths. For the main just add a height and put [b]overflow:auto;[/b] which would scroll it ;)
RE: CSS Just say you have #banner as your banner div, you can use background:url(pathtobanner.jpg); same for columns. To make a basic 3 column layout modify some stuff here: http://bluerobot.com/web/layouts/layout3.html
RE: HTML/FTP/PHP Problem is youve got spaces in your filenames, when theres a space in your image names put [b]%20[/b] eg [b]homepage%20button.jpg[/b] or rename your file so it reads [b]homepagebutton.jpg[/b]

RE: HTML/FTP/PHP put in the correct fields at the top (info you should've got from host) and then when you are loggef in it gives you the opportunity to upload/move/delete stuff on the server :)
