You don't have to change your laptop. Switching to Windows 7 won't cause more problems and it will enable you to use the new Messenger. Just to clarify for any others reading this, WLM 2010 (to be released as WLM 2011) is compatible with Windows Vista and 7, those on XP will have to stay with WLM 2009. WLM 2010 does support webcams, you just have to do "video call". The problem you are experiencing is with the web installer failing to download the components properly. The offline installer downloads it all before launching the install, so won't have the same problems.
