That's because it shipped from the US. Mexico is a completely different story.... on all accounts (including int'l wire transfers with their own unique system...ugh)

Anyways, if DHL is used, they charged quite a bit to handle the import formalities.... (they're one of the most expensive carriers for this; more expesive than USPS and even UPS. Not to mention their not so friendly practices when it comes down to extra hidden charges like fuel tax, green tax, etc and if they can use the highest/most expesive rating for extra charges they surely will).
Also their pick-up charges (there is no physical DHL droppoint in the neighbourhood from where the package ships) are high.
And since the package's value is just over $29 (€22), it also means that, together with all the other extra costs, the shipping costs will be counted too to calculate the taxes and duties.
In other words, using DHL (or most other carriers, but DHL in particular) to ship from Mexico to Europe will get ridiculously expensive in the end if you take everything in account, and thus a real no-go.
Either way, in the mean time, I have found a way cheaper solution via a friend of a friend of a friend who took the package from Mexico to Italy. And he will ship it from there..... result: only a fraction of the shipping costs and no import duties or taxes at all.
Thanks to all who contributed and made suggestions though!
