RE: 2 OS
yes, you can install several OSes in the same HD, each one of them in one partition. You can install, for example, Windows 98 and Windows XP, or Windows and Linux, or the three. However that isn't trivial. In the instalation of each OS, you have to tell where you want to install it (in which partition) and you have to do things very carefully. An error would be fatal. The OSes should be installed in some order to avoid (minimize) the problems: MS-DOS then Windows 9x or ME, then Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 and finally Linux.

U need to install everything again in both os's. No other option. U can't / shouldnt run progs installed in one os from another.

the problem is that each windows you install, has its own registry, and then if you have in windows xp the office suite, when you try to run ti from longhorn, he programs (word, etc...) will try to access the registry and they won't find the needed entries and won't work.

You can try to install again the programs in the same place where they're installed in the other OS, overwritting them, but i highy unrecommend this, because it may not work.

On the other hand, if you want to install XP and longhor, you'll have to install them in primary partitions (either with fat32 or ntfs) but when you boot one of them, the partition of the other has to be hidden. It's known that Windows'es can't handle properly 2 visible primary partitions * at the same time.

*-> 2 partitions that they can recognice (nfts, fat32). You can have an NTFS and an EXT2 primary partitions and all will go fine.
