i think it is more or less. the only people who tell other people bout gmail are those with it. and THEY have invites, even if they waste the 50, another 50 appears when gmail gets updated .
The fact that it makes it look like ur special and that u have to be invited makes it seem more exclusive and actually makes it MORE popular.
