How do I add colors in my messages?

1. In an Instant Message window, click on the Plus! menu, then Insert Format Tag. This will show the list of available tags to use in your message.

2. To select one, simply click on it. You can also type the appropriate Format Tag (like (!FC) for the Text Color), in your message, when you want to use it. There are two tags for the colors. (!FC) will set the front color, and (!FG) will set the background color.

3. In your Instant Message window, enter "(!FC", then enter a number between 0 and 15, then close the tag, with a closing parenthesis ")". For example, if the number was 4, the result would be: (!FC4). This will set your front text to the color attributed to the number 4, which is red.

4. In your Instant Message window, enter "(!FG", then enter a number between 0 and 15, then close the tag, with a closing parenthesis ")". For example, if the number was 8, the result would be: (!FC8). This will set your background text to the color attributed to the number 8, which is yellow.

5. For example:
"This text is (!FC4)red with a(!FG8)yellow background"
    Will look like...
"This text is red with a yellow background"

How do I add colors, with the IRC style shortcuts?

The recommended way to add colors to your messages is by using shortcuts. It will allow you to easily pick one of the predefined colors or a customized color of your choice.

1. In the Conversation Window, press Ctrl+K. A color window will appear. Chose the color you want as your front color by clicking on it, or type the appropriate number.

2. You can also click on the box that looks like a rainbow. This allows you to choose whatever color you want. When you're done, click "OK". In your message window, your choice color will look like this: (186,157,225)

3. To add a background color, simply add a comma, then reselect another color, with a number from 0 to 15, or a (000,000,000) combination.

4. When you're done, continue typing as usual.

5. Examples:
This is Ctrl+K4red :  This is red
This is also Ctrl+K(255,000,000)red  :  This is also red
This is Ctrl+K4,8red with a yellow background  :  This is red with a yellow background

Note: All this may sound complicated at first sight but after a day or two you'll use colors and you won't even think about it. This kind of shortcut command is borrowed from IRC and has been designed so that people can put some life in their message quickly and easily. It's just not very user friendly but it doesn't prevent it to be a pretty powerful feature.

How do I add colors to my display name?

You can put colors and text style in your display name if you want, but keep in mind that only people with Messenger Plus! installed will see the result.

1. Open a chat window and type "/nick ". This command allows you to modify your nickname and fully supports Multi-Format tags.

2. Press Ctrl+K to select the color you want.

3. Use Ctrl+R to add text style.

Note: You can add multiple colors and text styles anywhere in your name, just use Ctrl+K or Ctrl+R at the place where you want to start the color or style.

4. Press Enter to change your display name.
