O.P. Virus-Prone parents
Whenever I come in from Uni, my parents are always asking me to fix their computer... Viruses, adware, spyware. I know how to rid the computer of such things, but I don't know much about preventing them. I just, don't click on stuff that is obviously an advertisement, unlike them.

What free programs provide a constant protection from adware, and mainly, viruses?

I normally start with an ad-blocking hosts file.

Is my favorite (and the only one I can remember off the top of my head).

IN addition to that.

Make sure they are using FireFox :p (a)

Get AdBlock Plus along with the Adblock Filterset.G Updater (updated constantly blocking new and new ads).

Nod32 with NODEnabler (legal what (a))

If I was super paranoid I'd say use DeepFreeze but that's just stupid :p

I had the same problem, so I updated the PC to Vista for UAC (if you can get virus' with UAC you're doomed anyway lol).

All of a sudden his DVD writer stops working... I put my working one in there and that didn't work. Now he's convinced it's Vista that's broke it.
