i dont want to buy a router cos im not always on a network, its only when my bro is at home from uni.

still wont let me do it...
and i tried making a new connection but still no luck. i dont know why it should stop working if i changed my lan controller

[Edit] i managed to actually connect to the network, but i cannot use the internet still.
i ran this command in the command prompt and it connected to the network:
netsh int ip reset test.log
after using that i connected but my ip address didnt change, and it says the ip address been assigned by DHCP, but i dont think it has
i can now ping 192.168.0 addresses, but i cannot ping sites e.g. google

can you post ipconfig.. now?

i fixed it now, kinda simple though.
before i tried re-doing a network connection and it didnt work. i did it again and i bridged all connections on the host, its works perfectly

Aren't you using a router?

Your problem is SO easy to fix, i dont understand why no-one has mentioned anything about it already.

The computer with the new motherboard has created a new connection to the internet. This connection is auto-default set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically" and since you are not using a router or other DHCP Server (one that assigns IP addresses when requested) your computer is using the autoconfig IP address (the 169.* one).

To fix this, go to the "host" computer, and find the IP address it is using (cmd; ipconfig /all etc) then set your computer's IP address to this number + 1. For example, if the host's is 192.168.1.10 set your computer to 192.168.1.11. The subnet mask should be the same as the host computer and the default gateway and DNS should be the host computers IP address.
