O.P. Emoticons not valid image?
I have been randomly seeing this issue for a while, but it is getting much more frequent, possibly since upgrading to Live.

When I try to add an emoticon, I get a message that it is not a valid image file.  However, it is sent to me in Messenger from co-workers who have it added it on their IM (various versions).  I can also add it on other computers running Live.

Are you using the leaked Windows Live Messenger 8.1?
1) This is a know bug. Will be fixed before public release of WLM 8.1
2) I advise you not to use leaked beta's as they may damage your computer sometimes.

Or Are you using WLM 8.0?
1) Do you have Zone Alarm or Zone Labs? Try this fix
2) Do you have any addons except MP!L for WLM. Removing them may fix it too ;).

I get this sometimes. And I find that if a delete a few emoticons first I am then allowed to add it. I have alot of emotes, I'm not sure if there is a limit or anything though.

This also happens when an image is too big, try making it a better size or actually changing the file type, it should really be .png for normal or .gif for animated.

Using LM v8.0 & MP!L v4.01 with no Zone Alarm or other addons.
