This is by design (largely to avoid truncation)

What shows up differs due to where you put your mouse.

If you put your mouse over the screenname it shows the screenname and the email address, if you put your mouse on the personal message then it shows the personal message.

If you choose to show the mini display pictures in the contact list then this changes and the personal message is shown beneath the screenname
