O.P. new hard drive
hi, i have recently decided to take the hard drive (120GB - MAXTOR) our of my external hard drive and put it in my PC instead, and plave my smaller (40gb) hard drive into the external hard drive.
i switched them and now when i turn my PC on and it loads the PC status screen (where you press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup configeration)
and it says i do not have a primary slave, but i have set this hard drive to slave  (no jumper - but there is still 1 which covers 1 pin - but i tink this is permanent cos i didnt want to break it trying to get it off)
will i need to download drivers to get it to work or anything
i always thoguht you just plugged it in an it would work, which sounds stupid now that i type it :P

Your Windows installation is probably on the 40GB disk, and i don't think you can boot from the external harddsik?

no my windows version {XP} is on my other hard drive - my main one
this is just a slave (that part was stated above so i didnt think of any need to say it was the spare)

I see. Well, the 120GB that came out the external one should be set to slave if the 40GB that was in there first was a slave too. There should be some instructions on the HD itself that explains how to set the jumper to slave. Also, make sure harddisk autodetection is enabled in your BIOS.

i have just looked at the smaller {40GB} hard drive that i took out fo my PC to be replaced with this newone {120GB} and saw it was set to master:O
it was always the slave though - never anything more (apart from when it was in an older PC with an even smaller {20GB} hard drive )
it has always loaded as the slave and always run as this, :S
should i set my new one as the master and see if it too runs as the slave?
my other one {300GB} IS the master  so i dont understand how i have 2 masters but 1 running as a slave!?
