As for buying a new one, that is true though, they cost very little. If my drive would mallfunction I wouldn't bother trying to fix it either and I would just buy a new one...
At first I only mentioned one drive but it's actually two, the other one is just an ordinary burner and that one has also became a dunce, it reads nothing at all anymore. I have seen a CD Rom Drive icon on the task bar that says something about firmware update, I have not connected the system to the internet yet to find out if that will help but if not i guess I have to do as you suggested, get new ones.
