It was to redirect to the scripts website if entered.

If you look at our script: http://www.msgpluslive.net/scripts/view/116-Screenshot-Sender/

and went to the script link url it would take you to the entered website.

This used to work when the service was available, don't ask how Dempsey found that out.

My assumption is that this was developed for backwards compatibility of scripts, say you change the URL for updates if you use the script link Plus! will automatically redirect you to the appropriate website without having to update your scripts.

This was put in place for winning scripts that were distributed with Plus! as most of them were doing synchronous downloads on servers that wouldn't withstand millions of requests per day.
