Is it possible? I really want Ubuntu on my IBM ThinkPad T20 (which doesn't have a CD drive), so I've planned it out like this:

1. Laptop boots up, looks at floppy
2. Floppy says to mount the USB drive and boot from that
3. Ubuntu installs

So can that be so? what do I have to do? :/

If those are too much work, a netboot might work. I'm sure Ubuntu has the option. My first GNU/Linux install was from http://goodbye-microsoft.com/, as long as you have Windows on the thinkpad and a network connection it will work fine. It is Debian, but Debian is nicer than Ubuntu anyway really.

Ubuntu is based on Debian.

The thinkpad only takes floppy drives, I tried putting a DVD ROM in there once, it didn't work.

What I'm looking for is to put a file on a floppy that basically says

code:

mount USB_drive as D:\
run D:\start.exe

---

Or something like that.

well if it's connected to the internet then...

use Wubi

I've tried Wubi, but it gets stuck when it tries to download the iso.

Yes, but still, it is not Debian. You can, of course, access Ubuntu packages from Debian and vice versa, but Debian has a much neater and more complete base system, and stricter package QC [IIRC].

Curious. There's no point in having a swappable bay if you can only have the one thing in there. I've a T20, and the DVD-ROM works fine.

So basically.

1) Download the Ubuntu CD Image. Download VMWare Server (and register to get the licence key).
2) Install & Run VMWare. Create a new Virtual Machine (Call it Ubuntu or whatever, give it half of your systems memory - 64MB I believe)
3) On the Virtual Machine options page, change the CD Drive Properties from physical drive to virtual image, and then find the ISO.
4) Boot the VM, install Ubuntu
5) Make sure that you can access your USB Stick from the VM - you may have to play with the VM options, you can probably do this while it's still on.
6) Follow the instructions in the first link.

@Verte: the bay also takes Li-Ion batteries designed to fit in there, and the DVD-ROM I mentioned should have actually worked. I opened up the lappy and afaik it was fine. I may have to borrow my dad's DVD-RW from his new laptop and see if it fits instead. That might make everything a whole lot easier.

If all else fails I'll try andrewdodd13's suggestion.
