I know there is an option somewhere for this because I turned it off last time I updated Messenger, but I can't for the life of me find it again.

Whenever my chat window is minimised, and then I minimise every other window I have open, my chat window will always automatically maximise .  This is NOT 'always on top', but something different.  And it's driving me crazy!

Thanks in advance to those people who take the time to help people like me with tiny questions. 

This happens when you have tabbed chats enabled.

Really?  I must have thought I found an option, but it really it just coincided with me disabling tabbed chatting.

You know what?  I turned off tabbed chat.

When every programme is minimised except firefox, and I minimise firefox, then chat doesn't maximise.

But if every programme is minimised except Outlook, and I minimise Outlook, then my chat will maximise.  Same for AVerTV.  I haven't tried any other programmes yet.

It looks like Firefox does something different while minimising itself. Because when you minimise any other window as the last window, its button in taskbar comes out but when you minimise firefox as the last window, its button remains as if iti is still pushed down.

If you want to use Tabbed Chats feature, use Win logo key+D or Win logo key+M to minimise the last window and see your desktop.
