Unfortunately a lot of people get the two mixed up :p. Having a wireless network doesn't mean you connect to the internet at 54Mbit either.

100Mbit doesn't require special cabling, it's been around for a long time, AFAIK even 1Gbit takes Cat 5 well. Not sure tho, my switch is still 100Mbit.
EDIT: Wikipedia says Cat 5 may be unsuitable for Gbit, but Cat 5e does work.
