O.P. Ampersands/Shortcut/(&) in OK and CANCEL
FOR ALL TRANSLATORS
When should it be used and when not?

First of all, I know that in [Dialog.Preferences] you shouldn't.
In all other INI-TOPICS they are used.
But then someone stated in thread Swedish translation:

quote:
posted by Leif (Full Member):
Change all instances of
&Avbryt
&OK
to
Avbryt
OK
Please don't use ampersands on Cancel and OK buttons.

This is also been done in other programs (not all). Then in other programs they sometimes use the ampersand only on the OK-button and never on CANCEL.

So, what should we do? Are there any rules for this? Netiquette? What about the people who use other methods for typing (like blind people)?

PS: this message is also posted to original poster.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
:EDITO:
These ampersands should be removed (according to the comments in DefaultLg.dat):

Lang_Brazilian.ini
[Dialog.Preferences]
OkButton=&OK
CancelButton=&Cancelar

Lang_Danish.ini
[Dialog.Preferences]
ApplyButton=An&vend
DefaultButton=S&tandard

Lang_Greek.ini
[Dialog.Preferences]
OKButton=&ΟΚ
CancelButton=Ά&κυρο

Lang_Japanese.ini
[Dialog.Preferences]
OkButton=&OK
CancelButton=キャンセル(&C)

I think that the & at the OK and Cancel buttons should never be used. We haven't put any at the Spanish (Spain) translation.

I think you are perfectly right in doing that! Regarding the blind: Enter equals the OK button and Esc equals the Cancel button (so the don't have to tab their way to these buttons) On the other hand there really should be ampersands on the Apply and Default buttons.
So the Danish .INI is right!!

Lang_Danish.ini
[Dialog.Preferences]
ApplyButton=An&vend
DefaultButton=S&tandard

Windows standard! Right?

Yeah, but Patchou stated in DefaultLg.dat
quote:
;Preferences window. Do not put '&' shortcuts on buttons
[Dialog.Preferences]

So, ampersands in APPLY and DEFAULT or not?

See attached pic. This is, I think, Windows standard.

OK and Cancel - no ampersand
Apply and Default - ampersand

Reason:
Those who e.g. can't use the mouse must have a way of easily being able to press buttons. And Enter = OK, Esc = Cancel - so we don't need ampersands on those.

:) Yeah, I knew this already, but thing is, in most language-files there are totaly no ampersand in [Dialog.Preferences] (only the ones state in my first post here have them). So they all have to be changed then....

And second, is Patchou wrong then in stating: "No ampersands in this section..." ? (IMHO, yes he is...)

In Messenger Plus!, you can (and you should) put ampersands on every button except the Apply, Default, OK and Cancel buttons at thye bottom of the Preferences window, that's the only rule :)
