does MSN use the AIM system or something else?
im quite sure this is a noob question. if it doesnt what does it use? and what does use AIM?

They use completley different systems, in terms of everything.

They are hosted on completley different servers. And the software they use is completely different, i.e. the protocol is different.

no i think you are mistaken about the question im asking. i was watching the Mac Expo and Steve said that iChat connects to the AIM network which is the biggest one. i wanted to know what messegers use the AIM network cause i thought Yahoo Messenger does. i want to know if MSN Messenger uses AIM or something different.
if you dont understand that question mabye i can you just answer what messengers can chat with each other? for example can people using Yahoo Messenger chat with people using MSN?

Msn Messenger doesnt connect to AIM network .period!!

msn messenger service is an irc type network.

Each service has its own protocol and servers.
AIM is run by AOL and you will connect to AOL's servers using the protocol AOL have defined.
The same goes for Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger and IRC, each using different server and protocol

No. Because as i said above each use different protocols and servers.
Although it is possible to code a client that can use all the services combined together. For example Gaim.
Also the AIM network is just a term for the servers and protocol AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) uses.

oh thanks guys. i think i get it a bit more so does that mean that iChat can connect to AOL messenger i guess i can. but steve said that AIM was the biggest IM communinty. its all to confusing for me but basically i should just think that none of the IMs can chat with each other.

As far as I know, none of the protocols are natively supportive of interoperability between all the different IM clients out there.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is a client that connects to AOL's Messenger Network, I guess it's called AIM? (I have never used AIM and will never use AIM).

Yahoo connects to yet another network, though I could be wrong, I hardly use Y!IM.

and MSN Messenger connects to MSN. The Microsoft Network.. (..ever wonder what MSN stood for?...)

Yes, it is possible to do so (eg. Trillian, GAIM etc.) but that doesn't achieve interoperability, which is what Mad_onion is ultimately trying to inquire about.

As for MSN Messenger service being an irc type network...I can't stop laughing.
