O.P. Huh?  Enable Handwriting In 7.0
This may be a long opening post, so bear with me.

I can't enable the handwriting feature in Messenger 7.0.  Here's the reason why:  I upgraded from 6.xx to 7.0.  To enable handwriting you supposedly need to download Journal Viewer 1.5 from Microsoft.  But before you can download this program Microsoft requires that they run an authenticity check on your PC first.  If it's not a legit copy of Windows then they will not allow the download (or any other future support).

I live in Thailand, which is the home of pirated software.  I bought a custom built PC and apparently it was loaded with a pirated copy of Windows.  My authenticity check came up negative.

A friend then turned me on to Messenger Plus!.  He had loaded the handwriting plug-in while still running 6.xx.  I took his suggestion and downloaded and installed this plug-in.  It didn't work.  Obviously so, since upon further reading of the plug-in it mentioned that it works only with 6.xx.

I desperately need the handwriting feature since it acts as a whiteboard.  And I need a whiteboard-type function for business purposes to exchange ideas for a tool design.  And, I need it NOW!

The question I have is this:  can I work around my problem by having someone with a legit copy of Windows download the Journal Viewer (which I assume would be an .exe file) and then send me that .exe file which I could then install on my computer?

I don't want to promote anything illegitimate here, but I do need to get this feature to work.

Or, is there another version of handwriting that works with 7.0?  Kind of a stupid question since 7.0 comes with this feature.

O.K., can I go back to Messenger 6.xx, in which case the plug-in would work?

Or, are there other Messenger options/features or plug-ins that provide whiteboarding functionality?

This leads me to another series of questions, but I'll post those separately since they're not specific to this question.

Thanks,

Pete

You don't actually need to validate.

Goto
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?F...B44&displaylang=en

Then click on download,  then click on
"No, do not validate Windows at this time, but take me to the download."

then click on download. simple.

Installing Journal Viewer is only one possebility (and not the smallest one!)...

Because the handwriting plugin is only for MSN Messenger 6.x, as you've found out. In MSN Messenger 7 you don't need any plugin (and thus you don't need Messenger Plus! either to enable handwriting)

A whiteboard function is standard available in MSN Messenger if you have also Windows Messenger installed. The whiteboard function and the handwriting are two seperate functions. With the true whiteboard function you can both draw on the same "board"...

so, Tippaporn, read: "CookieRevised's reply to Need help with "Handwriting""
to know everything you need (and don't need!) to enable the handwriting (including the links)...

This may be simple but you are running Windows 2000 + right?

Try downloading from the link provided by GilgaMesh which should work if not you could use something like Ink Redistributables

[b]

Required for ink messaging: Windows 2000/XP

By installing this package, you will enable ink messages (send your handwriting instead of regular text messages) by default in MSN Messenger 7

The option to download isn't available on this page.  Which leaves the validation process as the only alternative.  Am I missing the download link?

Please, do not provide just a link to the ink redistributables without detailed explanation on how to install them (and without compatibily info)

-----

Tippaporn, please follow the link I provided, it explains everything you need to know/do (and forget about the Journal Viewer)...

When I download Ink Redistrubutables I need to choose the Everyone option, correct?  And the default file path for the installation is simply C:\Program Files?  The zip file comes with an .ini and .msi file.  What do I do with these?  Do I need to reboot after the installation?

Thanks

I get a different web page when I click on the Journal Viewer download link.  I'd like to paste the copy of the page here as you did but I don't know how.  There is no option to waive the validation.
O.K., I figured out that you had to hit "Continue" to get to the above page for the Journal Viewer download.  I downloaded it, rebooted. and I get the following when I click on the handwriting tab:

[b]Not all participants can view handwriting, so your messages will be sent as text

It doesn't work at all now.  At least before I was able to switch from text to handwriting, though the mouse wouldn't write.

I downloaded and installed Ink Redistributables but that doesn't seem to help, either.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but don't know what.

If you're using MSN Messenger 7, you don't need the full plugin anymore. MSN Messenger 7 already has support for handwriting build-in. To activate it you need the Ink Redistributables and they can be downloaded from: http://www.kaonet.net/files/msn/InkRedist.zip

If you're using MSN Messenger 6, then besides the Ink Redistributables you also need a Messenger Plus! plugin to enable the handwriting feature. This can be downloaded directly from this link: HandWriting_without_convert.zip (535.09 KB)

Note 1: Handwriting is designed only for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. It was not specifically designed for Windows 2000, but it may work. This means it is also possible that for your Windows 2000 system it doesn't work! It will certainly not work on Windows 98(se) or Windows ME.

Note 2: When you install the Ink Redistributables (weither it is alone or with the plugin), you need to install them with the option "For Everybody" ticked, otherwise it will not work.

Note 3: the convert button will still not work after you've installed the Ink Redistributables and/or the full plugin. For this you need to install another DLL which you can find here together with installaltion instructions: http://www.mongfish.com/msnmsgr/ (read the instructions first). With the convert button you can write text with your mouse and it will be automatically converted to typed text.

RE: Enable Handwriting In 7.0
First of all, undo everything you've done so far. I suspect you now have all things (partially) installed and messed up everything because of the confusing posts in this thread and from your friend...

1) Close every instance of MSN Messenger by right clicking its icon in the system tray and choosing "Exit"...

2) Go to "add/remove programs":
Search everything related to "Info Pen" and uninstall everything
Search everything related to "Ink" and uninstall everything
Search everything related to "Windows Journal Viewer" and uninstall everything

3) Go to your plugins folder from Messenger Plus! (useually c:\program files\messenger plus!3\plugins). There delete the file named handwriting.dll.

4) Reboot your computer...

5) Then reread my post carefully and forget all about "Journal Viewer", "InfoPen", etc., or anything you read in other posts or forums... only read my post and do as said there!

6) If you have the proper Windows version, proceed with downloading the ink redistributables.

7) After you've downloaded it, extract the contents of the archive to a seperate directory and execute Setup.exe... Make sure you choose the option "for everybody" when being asked!!...

8) That's all you need to do... start msn messenger 7 and handwriting will be enabled...

I know, but you don't need that for now, ignore it...

PS: don't double post, and certainly don't tripple post (making more posts in a row), this is against the rules you agreed upon when joining this forum. If you want to add something to your post and your post is the last one in the thread, use the [Image: edit.gif] button.
