ok well im backing up my computer b/c im about to reinstall windows xp and i already tried burning the backup files to a cd twice but both failed and on the third try the drive wont recognize any cd-r's or cd-rw's.  so i decided to compres all the files so i might be able to fit them on my 128 mb flash drive.  but with it compresed it is 300mb.  so i asked supersonic darky if he knew of anyway I could retrieve these files later.  he suggested www.yousendit.com  i dont think it is responding anymore...and i just wanted to drag the files onto someone's ftp site until i can reinstall windows xp.  any help is greatly appreiciated.

can't you reinstall windows without deleting any of the files? (think its called Repair install)

yousend is a decent site, but I've had problems with it so wouldn't recomment using it. You could try making a rar/zip or the file and breaking into 50mb incruments and hosting on something like rapidshare.

well i also need to repartition my HDD.

I'm no expert on the subject, but could you not partition your drive BEFORE resintalling Windows, and perhaps add a seperate partition for your files?

Thus you would have a partition with your current Windows installation, and one spare. Then just copy the files you need after the reinstall, and you have 2 partitions, with one empty.

But as I said, I'm not 100% sure.

Not so much compress even more, its more like taking a file and breaking down into smaller parts.
IE: Lets assume msgplus.exe was 500 mb *WHOA!*
you could archive it as an rar, then take that rar and break it down into smaller parts.
So msgplus.exe.rar (500mb) would turn into:
msgplus1.exe.rar (100mb)
msgplus2.exe.rar (100mb)
msgplus3.exe.rar (100mb)
msgplus4.exe.rar (100mb)
msgplus5.exe.rar (100mb)

You would need to have all the files to beable to retrieve anything from the archive, but you could hold the files on differnt servers so that downloading would be quicker.

Ouch! Then maybe make an archive, break it down and put one file at a time on your flash mem. and put them on a friends computer for the time being? Would take a lot less time then uploading them onto FTP if you have a friend close by that could help out (or even a laptop )

Reinstall over it... you wont lose files but Windows will be as new.
I did that with Win2k, i am 90% sure its the same with XP

ya i have an extra computer in my room that i could break that .zip file into but dotnorma has already given me a subdomain and it is taking a while i might do what u said.

well im going to install Win2k on it fresh install and then xp fresh install b/c the xp CD wont boot in startup but thats ok.  win2k doesnt take long to install maybe 20 mintues.  another idea might be to have a dual HDD and save them on there and then reinstall windows....

XP wont boot in start up? That sounds like your BIOS settings have boot-from-cd deselected. Might want to look in there, because installing 2k then XP is a waste of time and engergy

Win 2 k takes a lot of time....
take in account i installed it in a 9 year old compaq presario 4840 with 266mhz , 288 ram, and about 40 hdd..

then you have a horribly slow computer...for me it only takes about 20 or 30 minutes not a long time
