Ironically, Firefox does the exact opposite! I selected open in a new window, and everything still opens in tabs.

I have no clue why no one has discovered that yet.

Also a buggy. Nothing (I dont think) on WLM or Y!M opens on an existing window.

It's just the way Windows Live Messenger works. It is designed to specifically open a new Internet Explorer window no matter what your defaults are. As you probably remember, WLM 8 was released when IE6 was around (which didn't have tabs) so it didn't matter back then.

You can probably bypass this issue if you use StuffPlug but there is no version for 8.0 or 8.1 yet. Check out www.stuffplug.com and see if it has been released.

What's more, WLM doesn't use any normal method to open the browser. It bypasses the usual ways like ShellExecute() (which opens in the default browser) and runs IE directly.

If someone sends you a link in WLM in a conversation it will open the link in your default browser. I thought it was only the E-mail button which opened in IE no matter what.

Read this on Windows Live Messenger Newsgroup. Jonathan Kay explained (Source -» news:072DACB4-9EC3-4774-9324-FA49779C21BF@microsoft.com):
quote:
Messenger will only open the default browser for links in conversations.  For all other
functions Internet Explorer will be used and it will open a new window, regardless of your
IE7 tab settings.
