O.P. DVD-RW drive no longer writable
Hi

This is the strangest problem I have ever experienced with a computer. My computer has a DVD-RW drive which came with the computer. This has always worked perfectly until recently. A few months ago, Windows wouldn't recognise it as a DVD writer, only as a reader, and therefore wouldn't write to CD's in the drive. Other programs, specifically Ashampoo Burning Studio 6, worked and would write to this drive. However, they now won't, and claim that there is no writer installed.

Has anybody got a clue what is happening here? I haven't updated any drivers etc, and the latest drivers windows can find are installed.

Thank you in advance

Robert

Thanks. I have just Googled and found that Sony drives are actualy rebadged Lite-On ones, so perhaps there is a connection. I'll try this.

Lite-ON has a program you can dowload to upgrade firmware.

Try and find out a model number in Device Manager or on the actual driver itself.

Try finding your drive in here and goto the Downloads page

Well, I managed to find a Sony driver on the internet (Sony itself don't seem to know they ever made the drive) and installed that. This solved the problem partially. I can use Ashampoo and other programs now, just not Windows itself to burn discs. I looked on that link, thanks, but the drive to which I think mine is equivalent has no downloads! Typical...

Check that CD burning is enabled in Windows and that it has been turned on for that drive.

You can find lots of firmware at http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php. There is different versions, decrypted ones (good to rescue dead drives), firmware with fixed region checking and you can find alternate firmware eg Lite-On firmware for a Sony drive.
