A couple have paid a £800 ransom to get back their tiny chihuahua after it was dognapped by thieves.

Amy Francis, 21, a student at Oxford Brookes University, put up posters offering a £750 reward for Charlie's return after she was taken from the back seat of a car in Cowley, Oxford on May 17.

But on May 23, she received a telephone call from the dognappers who demanded £1,000 before handing over the pooch.

Amy and her boyfriend Michael could not raise the cash, so the thieves accepted £800.

Amy said: "On Monday evening we put the reward up as we were getting desperate. Less than two hours later, the phone rang and someone said they had Charlie and we had to meet them in 15 minutes with £1,000.

"We met some people in a car park and they showed us the dog. It was quite frightening but we were so desperate by this point we would've done anything and handed over the cash."

A police spokeswoman said: "The police were investigating the theft of a dog on May 17. The dog has since been returned to the owner. The case is now closed as far as we are concerned."
