Unless you are an Windows expert and know exactly what you're doing, this is a very bad idea. Yes, it can cause troubles for all sort of things....
Anyways, try installing
Windows Media Player to make sure you have all the updated and working codecs.
Also, do as Sunshine told you,
update Windows. And while doing so, also make sure you have all the updated components of
DirectX.
