Uninstall Messenger Plus, and MSN Messenger then reinstall MSN Messenger and Plus!...Also have you got any plugins installed, like the handwriting plugin? Do you use a patched version of MSN Messenger? Or do you have any other additions to MSN installed (Discovery or Messenger Mate and the like)

That makes absolutely no sense at all. The
optional adware is just that optional, in the install you accepted to have it...
And I do not get the what you are on about with a good firewall solving this, anti-viruses and firewalls won't stop you accepting an optional piece of adware...In the install just click on the refuse option for the sponsor program if you do not want it
