Log in to the account wich contacts are not in your hotmaillist, go to hotmail and click on contacts.. on top you will see your addy next to the status there's a arrow click that and choose add messenger contacts..a list will appear with all your contacts on that list.

No, one won't touch the other (it has never done so with me...) all you will see changed with ppl you don't have on your MSN list is that the messengericon will not be infront of the contactslist in hotmail anymore. But you could test that easily...remove a contact from the list in hotmail an see if it has done so in messenger aswell and vice versa
