O.P. RE: Apple might have to pay Microsoft $10 per Ipod!!!
A patent is a patent. Apple have no leg to stand on really, unless they can prove what they are claiming, which is that MS filed the patent AFTER the iPod (which would mean they did it deliberately for this reason).
