have you been getting any BSOD with the irq_less_or_equal_than message?
have you try'd to boot from xp cd, do first repair option over command line, perform a chkdsk /p to see if there any errors? if any error , (*1) do a ./mbrfix (enter; yes; enter) or a (*2) ./bootfix (enter; yes; enter) ?
explanation: sometimes, common processes do bad stuff with sys files and/or profile files or even boot disk files ...
(*1(mbrfix)fix damage files like ntldr on the root disk,
*2(bootfix)fix files on home folders like documents and settings/user)
... that prevents xp to rise from the dark screen...
