O.P. mail notification

I've just reformatted and have reinstalled msn messenger 7.5 (Build 7.5.0324) along with Plus 3.26.146.
But I used to have a place near the top that would show me when I had mail and the count. It would stay there, I would love to get it back if possible, anyone know how

I want to remove the ad bar at the bottom of my contact list
