You just have to program the auto-resize with those indicators...but...just resize the contact list a few pixel bigger.
i dont know what problem you may have with the tabs !?!? anyway, lets say that option will be available only if you dont use tabs !!!
about obtaining the size of the list itself, i am sure there is an function for that already !?!?!?!?!?
