I scan my computer monthly with Norton but it didn't detect any viruses.
Try ending them in the taskbar and in the task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) this may speed up shutdown time.
EDIT: To speed up your computer you should switch to a less resource demanding anti-virus like
AVG Free. In my opinion it is better than Nortan Anti-Virus
