OK lets set the record straight..

to change a normal status (Away, busy, etc) during sign in, you could patch it using either of the patches mentioned above.

But as to whether you could add the custom statuses into that, I don't think it would be feasable, as they are based of the normal statuses anyway, just with a bit of text in your nickname to personalise it hence why it would not be feasable.
